What is Australian Celtic music?
Australian Celtic music is a uniquely Australian folk tradition that grew from the music brought to Australia by Irish and Scottish settlers and convicts more than 200 years ago. Over generations, these Celtic traditions blended with Australian history, landscapes, stories and experiences to create a distinct musical identity.
While it still embraces traditional jigs, reels, airs and ballads, Australian Celtic music also tells Australian stories—of bush life, migration, goldfields, the sea, Indigenous history, and local heroes. It features both traditional tunes and original compositions inspired by Australia's Celtic heritage.
The JarrahCelts describe their music as Australian Celtic because it celebrates the meeting of two cultures: the rich musical traditions of Ireland and Scotland, and the unique stories and spirit of Australia.
Is Australian Celtic the same as the Australian bushband?
Yes. Most Australian folk bush bands are indeed Australian Celtic bands. Over time, those tunes, ballads and storytelling styles became part of Australian folk culture.
Not only is the music often the same, the dances are the same too. Most of what we know to be "Australian Bush Dances" are in fact Scottish set dances!
